Class and Food

Food has an interesting way of being marketed to different groups. Turn on the tv to a station that has cartoons and you will find food targeted toward them. Foods such as chicken nuggets, candy and soda have become staple advertisements for such programming and consequently have become favorite “kid” foods. To no surprise advertisers know who their audience is and know exactly how to target them. So it is no surprise that potato chips based on price point know how to target their audiences based upon economic status.
I thought it was interesting how different chip companies target to different economic groups. I never before realized that potato chip companies do this. I have always considered potato chips to be relatively inexpensive. Coming from an advertising standpoint it makes sense that lower priced chips would be marketed toward people with lesser economic status. I thought it interesting how the more expensive chips used more sophisticated grammar and “rarer” words than that of the less expensive chips.  By the less expensive chips using fewer and simpler words appeals more toward their targeted audience.  I also thought it interesting how the more expensive chips tended to focus more on health than their counterpart. As if chips are the most healthy snack item. It made it seem as though the lower class isn’t as health conscious as the middle to upper class people of society. The higher priced potato chips used appealing health related language such as “all natural” and “quality”. Whereas with the lower priced chips it focused more and taste and price value rather than health.
I’ve noticed that other food genres do the same thing as potato chip companies. For instance health foods are targeted toward athletic and healthy individuals. Take muscle milk for example. It targets toward people who work out on a regular basis. The packaging consists of the words “burn fat” and “lean muscle formula”. These words specifically target toward health conscious and athletic people.
