Food Will Bring Us Together

I really liked how Ahn and Nicholson connected food and the importance it had to not only to their family but to them as well. Food whether we are aware of it or not plays a significant role in the way we are brought up and our day-to-day lives.
For Ahn it was important for him to teach his son about Korean food. Growing up Ahn didn’t take much interest in his heritage. He instead preferred American cuisine to Korean. However once his parents passed away began to take interest in his heritage and his food. He said that he likes to make Korean inspired dishes to connect to his roots. He hopes that he will be able to pass down his heritage through food to his young son.
Nicholson had similar experiences with food as Ahn. Nicholson recalled his mom only eating white foods. He starts his piece by attempting to make a cheese sandwich the way his mother did back home in England. However he has difficulty finding the right cheese. As bland as a cheese sandwich may sound to Nicholson it brought him back home despite being thousands of miles away. Even though his mother’s food was quite bland and mainly consisted of white food it was comfort.
Both of these pieces in a way reminded me of my own experiences with food and family. Growing up my grandmother on my mom’s side made the best apple pie. My grandma wasn’t much of a cook however she could make apple pie. Upon her passing my older sister received her recipe and still continues to make it to this day. Eating the pie reminds me a lot of my grandma. It brings me back to the simpler times of life.
I definitely feel that food plays a huge role in my life and connecting me to my family. Whenever I go back home my parents always make my favorite foods. I feel that food is what brings my family together amidst our busy lives. Dinner is the one time of day when we can all come together and share our thoughts and reminisce about the food that we are eating.

The Break to My Fast

Just recently I became the proud owner of a toaster. Prior to having my own kitchen I would have never been excited about a toaster. However for my birthday I received a toaster and was elated. A toaster opened up so many possibilities of things that I could prepare on the go. For instance I am now able to have eggo waffles in the morning. I woke up this morning not that hungry so for breakfast this morning I had a toasted everything bagel and a glass of cranberry pomegranate juice. I went shopping yesterday and picked out my favorite juice, which happens to be cranberry Juice. I saw that the store had cranberry pomegranate so I decided to try it. After tasting the juice I found that I quite liked it. It had an even balance of sweetness and tartness. I chose to eat my bagel and juice in my dorm room kitchen. I didn’t want to eat in my room so I brought my laptop into the kitchen and ate at my table. I ate alone because no one in my suite was awake yet. While eating my bagel I was on my laptop checking my email and Facebook.
